Mavis and Flo

Hello, my name is Melissa and I am the designer and maker of mavis and flo.

My handmade process is three old.

First I create handmade knits for babies and toddlers. I use Australian made merino yarn that is beautiful and natural on babies’ precious skin. As an Early Childhood Teacher for the past 30 years, I understand that when babies and toddlers are comfortable they are able to explore and play, and that is where learning happens.

I also design and make crochet tutorials, patterns and kits for people to learn how to crochet. Crochet and creativity have been invaluable in helping me on my own mental health journey, and I want to spread the importance of creativity every day.

And then there is the fun projects to make and gift, crochet bags make a beautiful personalised gift (and I can customise these gifts, with little messages on the inside) that are handmade with love and care, right here in Australia. These gifts can often spark an appreciation for the importance of handmade slow fashion in a world that promotes the oppostie.

All of the finished pieces I create are designed and made by me, from the first idea through to the knitting, crochet, sewing and finishing. For my kits, I develop the projects, prepare and film the tutorials and pack every kit myself.

I ensure that my kits reflect the different ways people learn, from video tutorials to written patterns, all made with a slow gentle approach. And I always give the learners the opportunity to contact me for any additional support.
