My aim was to make a quilt with lots of colour and interesting bits of fabrics. The free-motion quilting (in dark blue thread) shows on both sides. The design is applied using Lumiere pearlescent paint, then ironed to set it. The free-motion machine quilting is first used to outline the painted design, then the background is separated into 4 quadrants with different fern-like designs in each quadrant - fern croziers (unfolding fronds), climbing ferns, fern leaves and rock felt ferns (in clockwise order from bottom left). The back is a batik of flowers, quilted with a climbing ferns pattern. The lining is a legitimately-sourced Aboriginal design involving kangaroos, and the quilting can be seen on it.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAll the fabric is cotton and all the stitching and wadding is cotton. Free-motion quilt around the flowers, in the black outlines. Then fill the rest of the space with quilting. Trim and make in to a bag (quilting the back sandwich), and include a special embroidery pattern on the handles. Some of the construction of the bag involved hand-sewing, as well as machine sewing.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eBag Details\u003c\/strong\u003e: The bag is 35 x 30 cm, and the handles are 49 x 4 cm, and have wadding to make them more comfortable. After outlining the leaves and flower with free-motion quilting in black thread, the background was filled with eucalypt leaves in the upper half and waratah or banksia leaves in the lower half also in black thread. The back was sandwiched with wadding, and free-motion quilted with leafy vines in green thread. The quilting can be seen on both sides of the front and the back.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eConstruction: The bag is made of cotton - fabric, wadding and threads - with just the paint being an acrylic. The handles have the same sandwich of wadding and fabric to make them comfortable when held in the hand or hung from the shoulder. The handles have a decorative embroidery along their length. The lining is printed fabric - gumnuts for the front lining and ferns for the back lining.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eMeasurements: The bag, on the outside, is 32 x 30.5 cm. White cotton thread is embroidered onto navy (or properly indigo) fabric using running stitch. The patterns can be geometric, or picturesque as here. Once stitched, the front and back were fused to padding, lined and stitched into a bag. A long padded strap was added, with machine embroidery in blue down the centre, so the bag can be worn across the body, or the strap shortened and worn on the shoulder or in the hand.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eBag Details: Each bag is about 25 x 25 cm, and the strap is 108 x 3 cm. The bag can be washed in cold water, and dried in the shade. If ironing is required, the use a setting suitable for synthetics.
