Product Imagery for Handmade
Your imagery, besides your handmade creations, is the most important aspect of selling online and it's a step that you don't want to miss. So what are the key aspects to consider when trying to capture the beauty of your handmade creations?
Creating Trust Through Your Images
More than ever it is absolutely crucial that we are using original imagery with your handmade products. With the explosion of ai and fake imagery, we have dipped into a 'trust recession' with customers. Just like you and me, they don't know what to believe, they don't know what is real and what isn't.
Research Ideas For Your Product Images
Our wonderful smart phones mean that you don't need to be a professional to get great product images, you just need the right set up and a vision of what you are trying to create. If you’ve been struggling to take great images of your products, I guarantee it’s because you’re not really sure what you’re aiming for.
Before you start snapping, research ideas for layout and images.
- Research on Pinterest for ideas
- Narrow down your search for what is achievable
- Look for images with simple backgrounds and natural lighting
Wherever you look for inspiration, remember that many images are ai-generated and when it comes to selling handmade, this is the opposite of what you want to create trust with your customers.
Use Natural Light for Your Product Photos
The easiest way to get great lighting and natural shadows in your product images is to use natural light.
A soft afternoon sun or light filtered through a window will give your creations the real life feel they deserve.
There are definitely product categories (like silver jewellery, sorry!) where you may need a light box to get the shot but more often than not, having natural light will help you transform your results straight away.
Keep Your Product Photos SIMPLE
You don't need busy backgrounds to showcase your creations, what you make is the hero.
You simply holding your creations is a great way to show the size of your creations and remind your customers and following that what you make is by hand.

Getting Great Images Is a Journey
If you're struggling to get great images, you are not alone.
The vast majority of artisans don't start off getting great images, just like your beautiful handmade creations, it takes time. It's not about expensive equipment or trying to be a professional photographer. It's all about helping customers see the beauty of what you make when they aren't standing in front of you.
If you're applying to sell on Madeit, we just want to see crisp, clear and well lit images.
Remove the overthinking and hold your creations outside and grab a snap.
This artisan space will support you to evolve and grow your image style.
